DocStream

Speculative | Concept | Critical

Second year CMD, duo project

Context

DocStream is a project made for the module 'Speculative Design' commissioned by the Amphia Hospital Breda. They asked students to design a speculative product, inspired by current scientific developments, to question the current situation.

The design comments on the increasing popularity of streaming your daily life, as well as on the current trend of providing insufficient funding to the health sector. It raises questions about what we should want to share with the world and the ever relevant matter of privacy.

Process

Because the assignment was so incredibly broad we started the project by thinking up about 70 different 'what if' scenarios. Trough process of elimination we finally landed on the idea: What if healthcare would become an entertainment industry.

Trough further research we noticed that we could go two different routes; either focus on the patient or on the doctor. To figure out which one would be the most enticing we made some prototype designs for each one. Testing showed that the designs made for the doctor would be easier to understand.

Instead of just designing one product we decided on designing the operating theatre of the future, because a single product did not convey the context fully. The equipment includes multiple products, that all focus on evoking the feeling of "Should this really be what is going to happen in the future?".
